The Longest Running Gourmet Coffee House In the Valley

About Us

Living in the rain and coffee soaked city of Seattle WA. In the late 80's Justin Shafer had a vision to open his own coffee house where he would serve the highest quality products with the most exceptional customer service that would be second to none!

Simultaneously longing to get back to where he once called home and  again enjoy the warm sunshine of Arizona. For the next year and a half he studied the coffee industry of the Great Northwest. Then in 1991 made the move back to Phoenix.

He started with the first and only gourmet coffee cart in Arizona. After a couple of difficult wins with the city of Phoenix and the county health department he operated on the sidewalk out front of the legendary Dushoff's bookstore at 32nd St. and Camelback Rd.

Arizona's Coffee Culture Begins.

Things were a lot different back then to say the least. Very few people knew what a latte' was let alone how to pronounce it.

With the desire to serve more wonderful customers the absolute best products, expediently in a clean upbeat environment and to make them our friends. (This became our motto and still is today) Justin went on to create more firsts for Arizona. The first coffee cart operation in a high rise office building at "The Phoenix Plaza" Central and Thomas. Then the first in a hospital "St. Joseph's" both in 1993.

Justin ran his coffee cart operations for two and a half years before Dushoff's succumbed to the new big corporate book stores. He then accepted a portion of their old space to build the indoor coffee house where Hava Java still resides today! It was 1995. The accolades were pouring in as fast as the coffee was pouring out. Winning awards left and right from local newspapers, magazines, and even a national magazine "The Washingtonian".

In 1996 Justin built the first two level coffee house in Arizona. It was in Awahtukee, 48th St. & Ray Rd.

In 2002 Justin began franchising. In 2003 He stopped. Justin found his company goal of 100% customer satisfaction 100% of the time was no longer in his control... Great lessons learned.

Skip ahead to 2019. The original Biltmore location is the longest running coffee house in the Valley and Justin and crew are excited to bring nearly 3 decades of coffee house experience to N.E. Mesa!
